Top 10 most viewed posts from 2014 on Living in Sin

2014 is coming to a close so I thought I would look back over the year and share with you which of my posts published in 2014 were the most popular. Unsurprisingly they were mostly food related. Hummm... wonder why? :) The one exception being an expat survey which was very popular on the Expat Wives Facebook page as people wanted to see whether their views of Singapore align with the global expat survey results.

Meatless Monday - Aubergine in tomato sauce & roasted potato slices - An experiment in the kitchen

A friend recommended that since I cook so much vegan food (not being a fan of meat (only eat chicken/turkey every so often) and having trouble to digest dairy) I should maybe start a regular feature. Lets see if I manage to make it weekly, but here is my inaugural "Meatless Monday" post. 

It has been a bit cooler in Singapore recently as it had been raining a huge amount, crazy storms and rain most days. OK, cooler does mean around 25-26 degrees rather than the usual 31, but you do feel it! So I have been enjoying using the oven to cook dinner more often, especially as with some of the dishes you can just leave them to cook away with little need to stand over them.

This meatless Monday was actually cooked on a Monday which I may not continue as then I need to write up the post which means I can't actually post it on Monday! :) So it may be cooked on the weekend in future and posted on a Monday.

Home Cooking - Christmas lunch in Singapore - my first Christmas away from home

We had our first Christmas away from home, so being us, we decided to host for the day, to keep us busy and distracted and surrounded by friends. My family generally does Christmas dinner so we don't need to worry about cooking until the afternoon, but the hubby wanted to do Christmas lunch. So we dragged ourselves up nice and early after having spent some of the evening before preparing some of the items (turned out not to be a great idea, more on that later....)

Here is the result on my place but I should have waited until I poured the homemade gravy on there!

Home cooking - Cooking, Cooking, Cooking - you would think we never eat out...

It doesn't look so pretty but it tasted good, trust me! I decided I wanted three different stir fry dishes with three different flavours. This is the end result with two veggies stir fries and a chicken stir fry.

This was the less original dish, the stir fried kailan (we just bought some seeds to hopefully grow it ourselves at home!) with oyster sauce and a huge amount of garlic. Same same, nothing special. 

The flavours here were mostly from the onions and the black pepper, with a splash of oyster sauce and soy sauce. Plus green peppers and button mushrooms with a hint of ginger and garlic, but not too much of either. 

This is one of my favourite dishes but I forget to make it most of the time! Super super simple but gorgeous and fragrant and light and yummy. It was inspired by one of the best things I ever had in Thailand, in Chiang Mai. It is basically a huge huge huge amount of ginger stir fried with chicken and onions.

Singapore - Pizza Fabbrica - Part 2 - Will it overtake Cicheti as our Friday favourite?

You may have seen my previous post about Pizza Fabbrica, the newest Italian restaurant to open on Bussorah Street near our office (check out that post to see the upcoming Christmas menu as well as the Beer degustation menu planned for January). And you might also know we have a bit of an office tradition involving Friday lunch being pizza. We have been going to Cicheti and AltPizza with our colleagues, but we have now taken them to Pizza Fabbrica for our usual Friday lunch. We feel a bit bad "cheating" on Cicheti which we love, but change is good right? And we feel the Cicheti pizzas are maybe getting a bit smaller which is a shame as they don't quite fill you up at lunch anymore.

So 2 Fridays ago, 10 of us exited the office in a rain storm and wandered down to Bussorah Street for lunch at Cicheti. We sat outside in the 5 foot walkway area, under cover on a super long table. We then proceeded to swamp the poor kitchen staff by ordering 10 pizzas! Well, 2 were calzones, …

Singapore - Tiong Bahru Bakery for some decent baked goods (at a price..)

I must say, I had never been to Tiong Bahru Bakery as I don't spend much time over that side of Singapore. I guess I am not quite hipster enough ;) But when we looked at the Open Door Policy menu and it didn't really have anything for me (they need to think of vegans a bit more....) we wandered on off down the road and came across Tiong Bahru Bakery and decided to give it a go.

Overall we thought it was pretty good, a bit pricey though, and probably better for drinks and desserts/cakes/pastries and breads than for the savoury items.

Home Cooking - Stir fries, curries + chapati, pasta, noodles = home cooking again and again

You like my cooking posts right? I sure hope you do, as here is yet another one ;) 

A multiple stir fry day! Yumminess all around. We were late out of work so decided to break our own rules and pop into Cold Storage next to the office. We found some cheap options which made us happy, the marked down to sell ones, like a kilo of chicken which was to sell by the next day for around 6$, and a pack of yellow peppers which were close to going off for 0.44$! And some organic oyster mushrooms because if we were going to spend a fortune on mushrooms (three times the cost at Sheng Siong) we might as well go organic and make it worth the expense as they weren't much more than the normal oyster mushrooms.

This was a lemongrass chicken that I made caramelise a bit, with onions and yellow peppers and spring onions, with some soy and fish sauce. Lovely. Fragrant, slightly salty and also a bit sweet.

Singapore - Christmas in Singapore - Christmas Tree Shopping and Christmas Decorations

This is my first Christmas away from my parents and siblings and I will be honest and say I am struggling with it. December for me is usually a month building up to two weeks at home near Toulouse, shopping for presents and the like. And usually I would be all wrapped up in winter clothes. So this is feeling a bit strange for me, in the tropics, without my family and no plans to get on a plane back to Europe. So I am taking advantage of this post to tell them I love them and I miss them.

But on the bright side, this is my first Christmas I will spend with my other half as we have always gone to our families for Christmas and met back up for New Years. And it is our first Christmas as a married couple. And we have space in our house here in Singapore so we can do things properly.

My husband will also miss his family but he understands just how upset I am, so he is going out of his way to cheer me up and make Christmas special. First thing he did was organise a Christmas tree. And sinc…

Singapore - Do You Need More Awesomeness In Your Life? My Awesome Cafe on Telok Ayer for Western Food

We helped out a friend and in return he took us out for dinner which was very nice of him. He suggested My Awesome Cafe as the location, which is down in the CBD area on Telok Ayer street. I hadn't heard of it before so did a quick google search, saw some positive reviews so we went for it.

I wandered down Telok Ayer Street and spotted all sorts of places I read about on blogs, or have had recommended so it was fun to locate shops like Pantler Bakery, Sophie's Bakery and wine places like Napoleon and a friend's fav - Sarnies.

Home Cooking - Coconut Lemongrass Chicken in the Le Creuset in the oven - Pinterest to the rescue!

You know we love to cook at home, as evidenced by all our cooking posts. But we find ourselves cooking the same thing over and over again, the easy usual favourites. That is perfectly understandable on weekdays when we just want to eat quickly and chill, but on the weekends we need to challenge ourselves a bit more.

So the other night, we raided my Pinterest boards for inspiration and came across the following: Chicken in Coconut Milk and Lemongrass.

G was on board, with a few modifications, so that was what we went for. And very happy to have done! One of our best home cooked dishes in a while! OK I admit the sauce isn't the prettiest thing ever, but it tastes *amazing*.

So what did we make and how? Read on to find out more!

Singapore - Birramisu? Don't mind if I do! Pizza Fabbrica - New Kid on the Singapore (Italian) Block

You know my pizza obsession right? It has been well documented on my blog (all my pizza posts can be found here) and it seems friends are even calling me the "Pizza Queen" (see their post about Fabbrica to see they are really calling me that!)

I heard via that a family member of a friend of his had opened a new pizza joint called Pizza Fabbrica on Bussorah Street so I sent them a mail to get their menu. It seemed interesting, I shared it with friends and suggested we give them a visit.

I am glad we did (see more on my first visit below) and I then followed up with feedback to the Pizza Fabbrica owner who then asked us back to provide feedback on their upcoming beer / food with beer pairing menu and we helped as a group (with Pizza Fabbrica's beer and wine suppliers) determine which beer should go with which dish! Loads of fun!

Singapore - Yummy Hummus and Fresh Pita from Pita Bakery @ Bali Lane

I have been wandering past the Pita Bakery on Bali Lane quite frequently but never stopped by for some strange reason. Well that will be changing, I have been three times in 3 working days!

Well, it does what it says on the box, i.e. it is a pita bakery :) They do different types of pita, I have tried one of the standard round pocket ones (below) and one of the longer flatter ones (further down the post). If you buy 5, you get 1 free. If you buy 10 you get 2 free. I ordered 10 for our Christmas party so received 12 of the standard pitas for my 10$. The bigger pitas with the flavourings are 2$ each. The Japanese green tea is 1.5$ and the whole wheat is 1.2$.

Here are the standard white pitas:

250g of home made hummus is 12$ - you can get 500g for 19$. I think 1kg was about 30$ but I would need to double check. The hummus is really good, nice texture, thick enough and a good bit of "smoke" from the tahini. I like it a lot.

Singapore - The Kampong Garden: Ways of the Gentle Warriors - Bollywood Veggies book launch

I was kindly invited to a book launch recently, for "The Kampong Garden", written by Carolyn Ortega and published by Bollywood Veggies with the support of the National Heritage Board, which was held in the Singapore National Musem.

The book is an introduction to growing edible gardens, encouraging young minds and novices to heighten their awareness of what they consume, with key messaging on sustainability and the environment. We all know Singapore is small and quite crowded but that shouldn't mean that we can't still grow on a smaller scale, using roofs and small gardens!

I had wanted to bring my lovely friend L with me as this was right up her street since she is very much into edible gardens, greenery, growing food and eating healthily. But she was ill and so N from came along and we had a lovely time. It reminded me of when we used to grow vegetables on our balcony in Nice, but more on that further down.

Home Cooking - Thai curry, Stir fries, Lemon chicken, Sri Lankan, Pasta...

OK gang, I need to apologise for some of the bad pictures, I need to stop using my phone when we cook! I should break out the camera to immortalise our creations in our kitchen. We are total foodies, we love eating out but we also love experimenting in our kitchen too. We like recreating dishes we have eaten in other places, other countries, other restaurants, as well as those we have seen on TV, online, on Pinterest or in our million cookbooks. And sometimes we just make it up as go along based on what we have found in the supermarket that day.

This day, we found portobello mushrooms at Sheng Siong as well as some nice firm button mushrooms so we decided on mushroom and pea pasta, I love the combo! I tend to start with onions sliced small and cooked down in olive oil with salt to bring out the water. I add the garlic in later as I find it burns and goes bitter if you start with the garlic.
